Project: Understanding doomerism
Date: 2023 - Ongoing

Mapping how disinformation manufactures democratic disengagement and doomerism.

Disinformation preys on uncertainty, amplifying both fear and futility to shape public behaviour in destructive ways. Collapse narratives, whether about climate, economy, or societal breakdown, distort real concerns into extreme conclusions. These narratives drive people toward two destabilizing outcomes: political disengagement, where a sense of hopelessness leads to withdrawal from civic life, or radicalization, where despair fuels alignment with extreme movements that reject democratic norms altogether.

At Ripple Research, we're studying the systematic undermining of institutional trust, and how ‘doomerism’ is manufactured through damaging narratives. Our research examines how these narratives emerge and spread - the underlying conditions, information voids, and coordinated tactics that manufacture disengagement. Understanding these patterns is crucial for institutions seeking to maintain public trust and combat democratic erosion.

Case study: Misinformation surrounding USAID’s dismantling

Our current investigation into USAID's sudden dismantling provides a critical window into this phenomenon of manufactured disengagement -  demonstrating how information voids create fertile ground for narratives that erode institutional trust and weaken democratic participation

In our ongoing three-part series, we explore these dynamics in detail:

  • Part 1 reveals the massive information void created by USAID's dismantling and website shutdown

  • Part 2 examines how this void enables fear and futility narratives that undermine democratic engagement

  • Part 3 (upcoming) will investigate pathways for rebuilding trust and democratic resilience

USAID shutdown reveals a major information void. US asks: What is USAID?
